The
2010 Preakness Stakes is right around the corner, and in preparation for the second leg of the
Triple Crown, Bodog takes a look at three of your best bets. So make your selections and then tune into the race on Saturday, May 15 for all the Preakness Stakes horse racing action.
On a roll since winning the $200,000 Gr. 3 Derby Trial Stakes at Churchill Downs on April 24, Hurricane Ike is on his way to the Preakness Stakes. A son of Graeme Hall, the rapidly improving Hurricane Ike began his year with a third-place finish in an allowance race on March 11 and followed that up with a runner-up performance in the $200,000 Gr. 3 Bay Shore Stakes on April 3 at Aqueduct. This John Sadler trainee had the benefit of having 2010 Kentucky Derby-winning Calvin Borel in the irons for his last two outings, but Borel will be aboard Super Saver for the Preakness Stakes. Instead, Hurricane Ike will be piloted by Robby Albarado, who is no stranger to the winner’s circle at Pimlico Race Course. Albarado won the 2007 Preakness Stakes with Curlin. Not only has Hurricane Ike been improving with each race, he has looked excellent in his preparations at Churchill Downs, turning in a 5-furlong work in 1:00 2/5 on May 5. He will need another big performance to keep up with the more experienced horses on the track come race day.
Caracortado was left on the outside of the graded stakes earnings bubble on
Kentucky Derby day but will get a chance to claim a piece of the Triple Crown pie when he starts in the Preakness Stakes. Michael Machowsky’s charge had a great start to his 3-year-old campaign, winning the $150,000 Gr. 2 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita Park in February. He wasn’t able to build on that success, however, not earning enough from his subsequent two races – the $150,000 Gr. 2 San Felipe Stakes on March 13 and the $750,000 Gr. 1 Santa Anita Derby on April 3 – to secure a Kentucky Derby berth. Experienced at the Preakness Stakes distance of 1 1/16 miles and now freshened, this gelded son of Cat Dreams will have regular rider Paul Atkinson aboard on May 15.
The only horse in the lineup with the distinction of having beaten Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver is Schoolyard Dreams, who poses the greatest threat to Super Saver’s bid for the Triple Crown. This Stephen Got Even colt also missed out on the Kentucky Derby by a slim margin but will now have the opportunity to play spoiler once more in the Preakness Stakes. Despite his only win this year coming in January in an allowance optional claimer, Schoolyard Dreams has been improving. He was runner-up twice at Tampa Bay Downs – in the $225,000 Gr. 3 Sam. F. Davis Stakes on Feb. 13 and the $300,000 Gr. 3 Tampa Bay Derby on March 13, in which he defeated Super Saver. The only real blemish was in the $750,000 Gr. 1 Wood Memorial on April 3 where he had no finishing kick and ended up fourth. Watch out for Schoolyard Dreams and jockey Eibar Coa in the Preakness Stakes.
