The
Breeders' Cup World Championships is a year-end event that features some of the best Thoroughbreds in racing today. This year, the two-day event will be held at Churchill Downs in Lexington, Ky., on Nov. 5-6. Juveniles are featured in four events: two dirt and two turf races. Get caught up on the top contenders for the
Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies,
Juvenile Fillies Turf, Juvenile and Juvenile Turf.
Juvenile fillies are highlighted in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies event, a $2M test covering 1 1/16 miles on Nov. 5. A Z Warrior is the frontrunner of this group: this daughter of Bernardini won the Gr. 1 Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park on Oct. 9 for trainer Bob Baffert and is 2-1-0 from four starts this year. And the Awesome Of Course filly Awesome Feather has dominated Calder Racecourse for trainer Stanley Gold, winning six in a row. John Sadler's Tell A Kelly won the Gr. 1 Del Mar Debutante on Sept. 4 and is also a contender.
Turf-running juvenile fillies will also run on Nov. 5 in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, a 1-mile grade 2 event with a purse of $1M. A daughter of El Prado, Winter Memories is the clear frontrunner. Trained by James Toner, Winter Memories captured the Gr. 3 Miss Grillo Stakes at Belmont on Oct. 3 with a solid 5-length score after breaking her maiden at first asking on Sept. 3. And Tale Untold, a daughter of Tale of the Cat, will be making the journey from France, where she has run her last two races for trainer Richard Hannon; she is 4-1-2-0 on the year.
The Gr. 1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile is a 1 1/16 mile event for 2-year-olds boasting a $2M purse and will take place this year on Nov. 6. Two big names dominate this event: Uncle Mo and Boys at Tosconova. A Kentucky-bred son of Indian Charlie, Uncle Mo broke his maiden with an incredible 14 ¼ length victory at Saratoga in August and followed that with an easy win in the Gr. 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park on Oct. 9; he is trained by Todd Pletcher. Boys at Tosconova is a Kentucky-bred son of Officer trained by Rick Dutrow, Jr. He romped by 12 lengths in his second maiden-breaking attempt at Belmont Park in July and then claimed the Gr. 1 Three Chimneys Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga on Sept. 6. Todd Pletcher's Stay Thirsty and Albert Stall Jr.'s J. B.'s Thunder are also names to watch in this event.
Turf-running juveniles get their turn in the spotlight also on Nov. 6 in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, a grade 2 test over 1 mile with a $1M purse. European invader Biondetti, a son of Bernardini, will get a chance to extend his three-race unbeaten streak that started in Newmarket on Aug. 6. Last out, the impressive Mahmoud Al Zarooni-trained colt won the Group 1 Gran Criterium in Milan on Oct. 9. And Kiaran McLaughlin trains the promising Soldat, a son of War Front, who is 1-3-0 from four starts and won the Gr. 3 With Anticipation Stakes at Saratoga on Sept. 3 by 12 lengths. Bourbon Stakes winner Rogue Romance and Pilgrim Stakes winner Air Support are also expected.
