Jack Goodman Stakes Betting Preview

by Patricia Woo | Oct 26 2009

The excitement of the upcoming Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita Park is reaching a boiling point with the big two-day event less than two weeks away. But the Oak Tree meet at Santa Anita is serving up other great races in the meantime, like the $65,000 Jack Goodman Stakes. This 6-furlong dash for 2-year-olds will take place on Saturday, Oct. 31, and will give fans a chance to wager on some promising up-and-coming juveniles.

Our Minesweeper is one of those rising stars nominated for the Jack Goodman Stakes. A son of Cause Ur Mine, this 2-year-old has won three in a row since starting his racing career in June. That maiden win at Golden Gate Fields was followed up by his first stakes victory at Saratoga in the $50,000 Cavonir Juvenile Stakes at Santa Rosa, Calif., in which he overcame a rough start. In his return to Golden Gate Fields, Our Minesweeper turned in another quality performance, running down Court Mischief to win the $50,000 Bart Heller Stakes by 1 3/4 lengths in September. Showing a growing maturity, this Michael Lenzini trainee has earned $32,700 and is 3-3-0-0.

Also under consideration for the Jack Goodman Stakes is Macais, a Kentucky-bred 2-year-old trained by Bob Baffert for Zayat Stables. He needed two tries to break his maiden, hanging on for a 2-length win at the current Oak Tree meet at Santa Anita on Oct. 2. His winning time for the 6-furlong race was 1:10.50, and his familiarity for the course should bode well for his chances come Saturday's race.

Another Kentucky-bred nominee is Winter Camp, a Forest Camp colt trained by Clifford Sise, Jr. This 2-year-old is seeking his first stakes win after being chased down by Purse Luva in a starter allowance race on Oct. 1 at the Oak Tree meet at Santa Anita Park. The Caesar Dominguez-trained Purse Luva has also been nominated for the Jack Goodman Stakes, though he did just run in an allowance race also at Oak Tree on Oct. 14, coming in a disappointing fifth.

Last year's Jack Goodman Stakes winner by a nose Backbackbackgone has gone on to win such races as the $75,000 Golden Bear Stakes at Golden Gate Fields. Who will win this year's Jack Goodman Stakes?
