by Bodog Racebook | Feb 14 2011
Nine horses started in Bodog’s Race of the Week: Race No. 4 at Santa Anita Park on Feb. 10. It was a 7 furlong dirt test for 3-year-old maidens on the dirt with a purse of $23,000.
At the break, it was Warren’s Hawk, with Martin Pedroza aboard, who got away first. But racing along the inside, Abelard (piloted by Chantal Sutherland), claimed the lead soon after and was in front by a head at the first point of call. Rafael Bejarano had his mount, Diamond Touch, stalking the pace in second while Edwin Maldonado-Alicea, aboard Cookie’s From Tony, well-positioned in third. Warren’s Hawk, meanwhile, had dropped into fourth. Call Me Later, with David Flores in the irons, settled into fifth on the outside, three lengths behind the leader.
At the half-mile point, Abelard’s lead was cut as Diamond Touch had moved up, but it was Call Me Later who was making the biggest move, angling in off the backstretch and moving into third, just a half-length off the lead. Moving well on the inside now, Call Me Later overtook Abelard and Diamond Touch on the turn and was 2 ½ lengths in front into the stretch. Diamond Touch could not keep pace and dropped back, 5 lengths behind the new leader. And well back at the half-way point but able to gain ground in the later stages of the race was Alex T, with Martin Garcia aboard, who made a three-wide bid to gain fourth place into the stretch.
At the finish, it was Call Me Later out in front by 6 ¼ lengths with a winning time of 1:23.05. Diamond Touch was the clear runner-up while Alex T managed to get up late for third. Eddingtonforgianna, Onelasttime, Warren’s Treasure, Cookie’s From Tony, Warren’s Hawk and Abelard rounded out the order of finish.
Call Me Later earned $13,800 for the victory for owners John Pagano, K.B. Saaren, Larry Smith and Dan Hendricks. Trained by Dan Hendricks, Call Me Later is a son of Old Topper. This is his second race of 2011, a welcome improvement off his Jan. 22 race also at Santa Anita Park in which he finished fourth. Call Me Later’s race record improves to 10-1-4-2 with $37,800 in lifetime earnings so far.
