    About Balmoral Park Afternoon Racetrack

Crete, Illinois, is a city with a population of around 7,346. In 1925, the manager of Churchill Downs, Col. Matt J. Winn, along with some business associates purchased 1,050 acres of land near Crete and named it "Lincoln Fields." This was strictly a thoroughbred racetrack until 1942 when the venue was shut down because of World War II restrictions. However, races did continue as meetings were rescheduled to Hawthorne Park and in 1954 Lincoln Fields was brought to life again and the races commenced.

In 1955, Benjamin Lindheimer, who was the President of the Washington Racetrack since 1935, put together a jockey club called the Balmoral Jockey Club. The club purchased Lincoln Fields and renamed it Balmoral Park. In 1967, it was fully converted to a half-mile track that mostly ran harness races throughout the year. By 1989, Balmoral added a one-mile track and by 1991 Balmoral Park had exclusively created a full harness racing facility.
