    About Cal Expo Racetrack

Harness racing in California is an ongoing story of change. Consider the case of the Capitol Raceway at Cal-Expo in Sacramento, known informally as Cal Expo or Sacramento Raceway. When this track first opened in 1971, harness racing was booming in California, with successful meets at Hollywood Park and Los Alamitos. Standardbreds could easily train and race year-round on this highly popular circuit.

That was then. Marjorie Everett, who already had control of Hollywood Park, bought Los Alamitos in 1983 and moved aggressively to monopolize the sport. She converted Hollywood Park for thoroughbreds only, concentrating the standardbreds at Los Alamitos and effectively putting an end to the larger circuit. By 1995, there was no harness racing on Cal Expo’s one-mile dirt oval.

Capitol Racing was born out of these difficult circumstances, reviving the standardbred season at Cal Expo before handing the baton to Sacramento Harness in 2005. The State Fair would take over three years later. The harness racing season now runs primarily on the weekends from November through May; during the State Fair itself in the late summer, thoroughbreds, Quarter Horses and Arabian Horses are also on the schedule.

Cal Expo honors its history by holding a number of events named after local builders, drivers and trainers. Among these are the Bob Staats Pacing Series, the Bob Gordon Pacing Series and the Dr. Gary Budahn Trotting Series. Other events in 2012-13 are being named in memory of Marvin Shapiro, Lonnie Beck, Joe O’Brien and Joe Lighthill, among many other deserving figures in harness racing.
