    About Canterbury Park Racetrack

Chief Shakopee II was a Dakota chief (actually Ojibwa by birth) whose band settled along the Minnesota River in the late 1700s. It is there you’ll find the city of Shakopee, just southwest of Minneapolis-St. Paul, and Shakopee is where you’ll find Canterbury Park.

This track was opened in 1985 as Canterbury Downs after the state approved pari-mutuel betting on horse racing. It hasn’t been a smooth ride. Business was slow at first because of the growth of casino gambling on Native land. Canterbury Downs closed in 1992, but the arrival of simulcasting allowed the track to climb out of debt and re-open to live horse racing in 1994. The name change to Canterbury Park was made the following year.

Things got bumpy again in July 2011 when the state government was shut down and Canterbury Park was forced to close. However the doors were opened three weeks later after state officials reached a budget agreement. The 2012 season (May 3 to September 1) went without a hitch.

Canterbury Park holds live racing Thursday through Sunday on a one-mile dirt oval (sandy loam) and a seven-furlong turf course. The yearly calendar features over 25 stakes races, with the largest purse awarded at the $150,000 Mystic Lake Derby for 3-year-olds (one mile, turf). This fine facility also hosts a five-furlong training track with stables for 1,500 horses. Plus, just for fun, Canterbury Park holds ostrich and camel races in July. No wagering allowed.
