    About Dover Downs Racetrack

Some tracks extend their racing seasons by combining thoroughbreds with standardbreds, or horses with dogs. However there’s only one facility that combines harness racing with NASCAR racing: Dover Downs in Delaware’s state capital.

These two sports had been operating under the same umbrella since opening in 1969. In 2002, Dover Downs Gaming and Entertainment was spun off from the company’s auto racing interests, and Dover Downs International Speedway (aka “The Monster Mile”) was renamed Dover International Speedway.

Not coincidentally, 2002 also saw the opening of the Dover Downs Hotel and Conference Center, which has since expanded and is now known as the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. This is where you’ll find the harness racing. The season covers over 140 live racing dates from October through April, and is run on a five-furlong bowl-shaped dirt track on the infield of The Monster Mile.

The most important race on the Dover Downs calendar is the Progress Pace. This event was first held in 1996 and was run in 2012 with a purse of $300,000. Horse lovers will also gather in droves for the Matron Series, the oldest continuing stakes series in harness racing. This three-week racing extravaganza split into events for 2-year-olds and 3-year-olds, pacers and trotters, and fillies and colts.

The main event of the Matron Stakes is the hotly contested 3-year-old colt pace final with a purse of $190,000 awarded in 2012. Keep an eye out as well for the prestigious Delaware Standardbred Breeders’ Fund for the 2-year-olds, with purses climbing into six-digit territory.
