    About Dubai Meydan Racetrack

You may have noticed that the United Arab Emirates is where the money is these days. This oil-rich country on the Persian Gulf is actually a collection of seven principalities or emirates (therefore the name), one of them being Dubai, which is where you’ll find the new and impressive Meydan Racecourse – home of the Dubai World Cup.

Impressive is an understatement. Meydan (Arabic for “meeting place”) makes your typical American racino complex look like a Chuck E. Cheese’s. The racecourse is part of a larger planned community called Meydan City, which broke ground in 2007 in the middle of the construction boom. The Meydan Racecourse site (replacing the Nad Al Sheba course) includes a five-star hotel, a marina and a mile-long grandstand with room for 60,000 spectators.

Meydan Racecourse is home to two tracks: a 2,400-meter (12 furlongs) turf track and a 1,750- meter (8.75 furlongs) synthetic track made of Tapeta Footing, a combination of sand and other materials that can also be found stateside at Presque Isle Downs and Golden Gate Fields. Tapeta has earned high marks for durability and safety.

This is the track used for the Dubai World Cup, the richest horse race in the world at a staggering purse of $10 million. The World Cup is run over 10 furlongs and is open to a mix of thoroughbreds: 4-years-old and up for horses from the Northern Hemisphere and 3-years and up for the Southern Hemisphere. The first winner was Cigar in 1996; the 2007 Preakness and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Curlin also took the World Cup in 2008.
