    About Finger Lakes Racetrack

They call it “the thumb.” Finger Lakes Racetrack in Farmington, New York has held over 60,000 horse races since opening in May, 1962. Now that the facility includes a busy racino lined with video lottery terminals, Finger Lakes can continue to offer nearly 160 racing days a year from April to November.

While the sport has waxed and waned in New York, Finger Lakes has continued to draw the top jockeys working in the region; among the past riders here were Bill Shoemaker, Pat Day, Angel Cordero, Steve Cauthen and Julie Krone. The main attraction is the $150,000 New York Derby (8.5 furlongs, 3-year-olds), run on the thumb’s one-mile dirt oval (sandy loam) every July. This is the second of three legs for the Big Apple Triple, the others being the Mike Lee Handicap at Belmont and the Albany Stakes at Saratoga.

The biggest purse at Finger Lakes, though, is at the New York Breeders’ Futurity, a six-furlong sprint for 2-year-olds bred in-state. The 2012 race had a purse of nearly $250,000 and was won by West Hills Giant over the 4-5 favorite, In Harm’s Way.

Finger Lakes also holds the $50,000 Wadsworth Memorial Handicap (nine furlongs, 3-year-olds and up) every Fourth of July. In a brilliant marketing move, 2007 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Funny Cide was lured to Finger Lakes with the purse doubled to $100,000; he won by three lengths in what turned out to be the last race of his career.
