    About Gulfstream Racetrack

There’s a reason people want to move to Florida. This tropical paradise is about as good as it gets for weather in the United States. Horses love it, too. That’s why Gulfstream Park continues to thrive in a business that has seen its ups and downs. All the best thoroughbreds come here on their way to compete in the Triple Crown.

Gulfstream Park opened in 1939 in Hallandale Beach, not far from Fort Lauderdale. Business picked up in 1952 with the expansion of the grandstand and the inaugural running of the Florida Derby. This Grade 1 stakes race (nine furlongs, dirt, 3-year-olds) now offers a purse of $1 million and has become one of the largest social events on the calendar, not to mention a primary stop on the Triple Crown Trail. Past winners include 14 eventual Kentucky Derby champions, from Nashua in 1955 to Big Brown in 2008.

Over 30 other graded stakes races are run every year at Gulfstream Park from January to April, split between the nine-furlong dirt course and the one-mile turf course – both the product of track renovations in 2005. Magna Entertainment first bought Gulfstream Park in 1999 and invested heavily in development after slot machines were approved in 2004.

The Stronach Group is officially in charge now that Magna has spun off its gaming assets. Owner Frank Stronach is an Austrian-Canadian billionaire and a five-time Eclipse Award winner for Outstanding Breeder, producing champions like 2004 Horse of the Year Ghostzapper.
