    About Hawthorne Harness Racetrack

Harness racing closed at Chicagoland’s Hawthorne Race Course in 2008 (see the Hawthorne Thoroughbred article for more about this venue) after the racetrack failed in its bid to secure the 10th and final racino license being awarded in the state of Illinois. Despite the promotional support of former Chicago Bears tight end and head coach Mike Ditka, Hawthorne didn’t even make the final three in the bidding process.

At the time, Hawthorne president Tim Carey was proposing a massive racino complex that would have devoted 15% of revenues to Illinois horse racing. The $500-million proposal called for a 40,000-square foot casino with room for 1,150 slot machines, a 300-room hotel and conference center, a bowling lounge, a multiplex movie theater, an outdoor amphitheater, a water park and up to a dozen restaurants – including the largest sports bar in the state.

Hawthorne’s final harness racing meet in the summer of 2008 was highlighted by the Night of Champions, where 2-year-old gelded trotter Southern Rocketop broke his own track record during the second leg of the $52,500 Maxter Series. The Woonsocket, Rhode Island-bred trotter is the product of Psychic Spirit and Summer in the City; the Psychic Spirit Stakes are held every year at nearby Balmoral Park.

Recent legislation in Illinois has allowed for the installation of slot machines at harness racing tracks, plus added casinos in five cities, so there’s always hope that the standardbreds will return to Hawthorne. In the meantime, there’s always the thoroughbred meet from April through October/November.
