    About Meadowlands Thoroughbred Racetrack

The Meadowlands Racetrack in East Rutherford, New Jersey is one of the top locations for harness racing in North America, but thoroughbreds also get their shot at “The Big M” during the autumn session. The question moving forward is whether the track will return to its original purpose as a standardbred-only venue, if it remains open at all.

Meadowlands opened for harness racing in 1976 as part of the state-run Meadowlands Sports Complex, alongside Giants Stadium, which has since been torn down and replaced by MetLife Stadium. Thoroughbred racing was introduced just one year later. As of 2012, state officials were planning to privatize both the Meadowlands and Monmouth Park racetracks, which would allow for further development. There have been talks to merge the two operations, or to convert the Meadowlands track for NASCAR racing.

The current Meadowlands facility includes a standard one-mile dirt oval, as well as a seven-furlong turf course for the thoroughbreds only. The dirt track is wide enough (90 feet) to produce some of the fastest times in the sport. Most races at the Meadowlands are run at night, but the thoroughbreds typically run in the afternoon.

The 2013 calendar for thoroughbreds includes 10 racing days between October 11 and November 2. Events such as the Grade 2 Meadowlands Cup (now the Monmouth Cup) and the Grade 3 Cliff Hanger Stakes moved to Monmouth Park in 2010 as part of a cost-cutting measure. The top Meadowlands purses for thoroughbreds in 2012 were $30,000 and up at select allowance races.
