    About Portland Meadows Racetrack

Thoroughbred racing on America’s West Coast owes a great deal to William P. Kyne. He was a San Francisco businessman who was planning to become a priest before deciding instead to mount the 1933 campaign that led to the legalization of pari-mutuel wagering in California. Kyne immediately went to work building Bay Meadows Racetrack in San Mateo, which proved so successful that Kyne was able to expand northward with the construction of Portland Meadows in Portland, Oregon.

Opened in 1946, Portland Meadows was the first thoroughbred track in America to offer nighttime racing, one of several innovations Kyne brought to the sport. The track has since changed ownership several times and has survived floods and fires, re-emerging bigger and better every time. The Stronach Group currently owns and operates Portland Meadows following the re- structuring of Magna Entertainment and MI Developments.

Portland Meadows is the home of a one-mile dirt oval that was resurfaced by Magna after they bought the track in 2001. Racing was formerly limited to the winters, but in 2012, a new summer- fall meet was held, highlighted by the 47th running of the Portland Meadows Mile Handicap (3-year- olds and up).

The biggest day on the Portland Meadows calendar is Oregon Championship Day, a series of races that includes five ungraded stakes and is only open to Oregon-bred horses. The main event is the $35,000 Don Jackson Futurity (one mile, 2-year-olds), which was won by the filly Calypsonoted at 7-2 odds after her originally scheduled Oregon Debutante failed to fill.
