    About Presque Isle Downs Racetrack

While horse racing tracks across America have been converting from dirt to synthetic, Presque Isle Downs has never had to worry about making the switch. This Erie, Pennsylvania racino opened in 2007 with a state-of-the-art, one-mile Tapeta Footing oval – the first of its kind in the United States, and the first synthetic horse track of any kind in the Northeast.

Presque Isle Downs is owned and operated by West Virginia-based MTR Gaming Group, who got their start with Mountaineer Racetrack (formerly Waterford Park) and are also behind the new Scioto Downs racino in Ohio. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania collects 55% of the gaming revenues at Presque Isle Downs.

The thoroughbred season at Presque Isle Downs runs from May to September and covers 100 days of live racing, highlighted by the only graded stakes on the calendar, the Grade 2 $400,000 Presque Isle Downs Masters Stakes (6.5 furlongs, 3-year-olds and up) for fillies and mares. The 2012 winner, Groupie Doll, had a tremendous year that included victory at the Grade 1 Humana Distaff Handicap, part of the undercard at the Kentucky Derby.

Presque Isle Downs hosts over a dozen ungraded stakes races every year, with the top purse reserved for the $250,000 Presque Isle Mile Stakes for 3-year-olds and up. Horse lovers will also pay close attention to the $100,000 Tom Ridge Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds. Tom Ridge was the Governor of Pennsylvania from 1995 to 2001 and the country’s first Secretary of Homeland Security under President George W. Bush.
