    About Remington Park Racetrack

The synthetic track is one of the most important advances the sport of thoroughbred racing has ever made. However, as with any new technology, the first few attempts didn’t turn out so well.

Oklahoma City’s Remington Park opened in 1988 with a one-mile Equitrack oval – basically sand covered with a wax polymer, making it the first synthetic racing track in the United States and just the second anywhere in the world. Ironically, this all-weather track couldn’t stand up to the hot Oklahoma summers and was replaced with dirt in 1991.

At least they tried – which speaks volumes for Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. He and his family were the respected caretaker owners of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers during their championship years in the 1980s, and the people behind the development of Remington Park – as well as Thistledown and Louisiana Downs. The Equitrack experiment may not have panned out, but Remington Park (now owned and operated by Global Gaming RP) is nonetheless one of the most successful horse racing venues in the country.

The racing season at Remington Park is split into two sessions: Paint, Appaloosa and Quarter Horses from March through June, and thoroughbreds from August through December. The highlight of the thoroughbred meet is the $400,000 Oklahoma Derby (nine furlongs, dirt, 3-year-olds), one of over 30 non-graded stakes races on the calendar. Remington Park is also home to a seven- furlong turf course that features the $100,000 Edward J. DeBartolo Memorial Handicap (nine furlongs) for 3-year-olds and up.
